Needlepoint Luna Moths

Hi Tamales,
I just wanted to update you on what I'm currently working on. I still need to post my newest koi painting, but in the meantime, I thought I'd show you my needlepoint luna moths. I wanted to see if I could make something 3-dimensional out of needlpoint other than the flowers I've been making for my needlpoint fish pond. I sketched the layout on old graph paper first, composing the wings and body. The top two wings are one piece and the ones underneath are two separate pieces. I then bought some fuzzy pipe cleaners from Michael's and stitched them onto the body.
I made these moths for my Creative Process class. I'm supposed to display them somewhere on campus, so I'm hanging them off of tree trunks.
Enjoy! :)

  1. this is so cool looking. It is kind of inevitable not to compare this type of look to modern day image with pixels. It reminds me a lot of nintendo enemiesa and I think that's a good thing.

  2. It does remind me of an image with pixels too, but I had never thought of it that way until people told me. It's nice to hear other's interpretations. :)

  3. liz! If youa re going to put them outside you should cover them with some type of glazing that will harden and protect the material from enviromental damage. Matte medium won't do but Hal at the shop can recommend something or even Kirk!
